Tartaros (タルタロス Tarutarosu) is Bel-Peol's primary Treasure Tool in the form of a chain used for restraining[1] (a kusari-fundo in the anime). When it is not used, Tartaros would be placed within the great furnace-shaped Treasure Tool, Gehinnom housed within Seireiden, drifting around the other two Treasure Tools exclusively made for the Trinity.
It is only allowed to be used during the execution of the Grand Order, along with Trigon and Shintetsu Nyoi. However, since Bel-Peol is routinely engaged in carrying out the Grand Order, Tartaros is usually shortened and worn by her as an accessory.[1]
Background[]
Tartaros in the Novel[]
Like the other Treasure Tools wielded by the Trinity, Tartaros was specially created by the God of Creation, the Snake of the Festival.[1] Tartaros's long chain has unknown length and can float by itself. The chain also moves and disassembles freely according to its wielder’s will. Bel-Peol sometimes even uses it as a foothold for movement.
Its chains were considered impervious to ordinary force and resistant to even Unrestricted Spells, but Tenmoku Ikko, who temporarily revived at Shana’s request, effortlessly severed it with Nietono no Shana, causing that portion of the chains to disappear. It is assumed that Tartaros could regenerate its segments even if they were shattered, based of the fact that Bel-Peol shows no hesitation in breaking the chain to use it.
Tartaros in the Anime[]
In the anime adaptation, Tartaros has more prominent roles compared to the light novels:
- In the first season, Bel Peol is depicted wielding Tartaros in a more direct and aggressive manner by swinging them to attack enemies.
- In the second season, Tartaros’ abilities are significantly expanded:
- Bel Peol creates energy constructs resembling chains and disguises them as bracelets; she uses it to sever Hecate’s Faux Vessel, Konoe Fumina, from the causal ties of the Crimson Realm which successfully deceives the Flame Haze.
- She also uses Tartaros' properties to sever and conceal the Power of Existence drawn from the Fountain of Existence and hides it under Misaki City for several months without being detected by the Flame Haze.
Interestingly, Tartaros itself is not directly utilized and spent. Instead, chain-shaped energy crystals are deployed in large numbers. When they shatter and disappear, their severing effects are also nullified simultaneously.
Uses[]
Severance of All Causality[]
This allows it to isolate and block specific phenomena; these phenomena extends to intangible and imperceptible things. For examples, Tartaros could block the resonance between Hecate and the Psalm of the Grand Order during the Great War, as well as the connection to the Rift Between Both Worlds.
When activated its power, the chain would either complete a loop and form a knot, or create a ring by detaching its segments. Each individual link of the chain also possessed the same power.
Just before the final battle at the Misaki City, Bel-Peol launchs four rings of chains in all directions, synchronizing them with the city's enclosing Fūzetsu. This prevents interference with the Power of Existence inside; it ensures that while humans could still be physically hurt in the fight, they could not be devoured by any Denizens.
Sealing[]
As demonstrated when its separated portion was placed on Shana's wrist when she was captured and taken to Seireiden. Shana's abilities as a Flame Haze were sealed, reducing her strength to that of a normal human, along with her ties with surroundings, making normal humans forget about her. Additionally, those who had their abilities sealed by Tartaros would no longer feel hunger or fatigue.
It can seal Treasure Tools' abilities as well, as shown when a portion of the chain was placed around Kazumi Yoshida's neck to seal all Giralda's functions except the one that allowed her to move within the Fūzetsu.
Storing Unrestricted Spell Insignia[]
Tartaros could seal Unrestricted Spell Insignia inside and be activated as she wishes. One of the Insignia is the one that activates Gordian Knots, which in turn store teleportation spell, to summon Ribesal and Pirsoyn to her.[2]
Storing Rinne[]
Each chain loop could seal several Rinne inside, which could later be released as needed by shattering the designated segment.
