Stolas (ストラス Sutorasu?) is a Great War veteran and a Herold of Bal Masqué with the true name, "Halcyon Flight" (翠翔 Suishō?).

Appearance[]

Stolas' body is similar to a bird's body with only a part of its head; his face is positioned on the breast portion of his body. His face consists of a pair of eyes like that of a cat's and a mouth with jagged teeth. Stolas' body is also wrapped in feathers. His eyelids are at the bottom of his eyes and when he blinks, they come up to cover his eyes.

In the light novels and his cameo in Shakugan no Shana Second, Stolas appears much smaller. He has a rounder body shape, with his eyes being smaller and further apart. He also has smaller wings. In Shakugan no Shana Final, Stolas is much larger, with much larger wings that almost touch the ground as he walks. He has long, muscular legs, with his feet more noticeably bird-like. He is less round and is rather tall.

Personality[]

In contrast to his appearance, Stolas is actually a calm and polite character, probably due to his associates.

Background[]

StolasMinack

Stolas discusses with Gogmagog during the Great War.

Stolas is a member of Bal Masqué, with the position of Herold, the operative class which act as messengers and negotiators. He is a veteran who has been active since before the Great War, earning the respect and trust of even Crimson Lords.[1] For example, Ose, a Crimson Lord, refers to him as "Stolas-dono" (ストラス殿 Master/Lord Stolas?), thus Stolas appears to receive treatment from his fellow affiliates with respect equal to a Lord. He is seen to have the ability to summon lower-level Denizens.

Just before the events in the Great War, he is assigned by Bel-Peol as an envoy to the leader of Minack, Gogmagog. Upon his visit, he almost risked having an encounter with the "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" and the "Manipulator of Objects", who had initiated a raid against the fortress. Stolas becomes witness to the power of Mathilde Saint-Omer, and has shown fear towards it.

At a later time, Stolas attempted to halt the ceremony of another contract with the "Flame of Heaven" by assigning Vine, but this backfired.

Scars from the Storm Arc[]

As Bal Masqué focuses on the different Outlaw headquarters, Stolas joins Sydonay's army as he leads it to the Dorel Party, an important, information-based Outlaw Network based in Zurich, Switzerland which is lead by the retired Flame Haze Dorel Kubelík. Stolas moves forward from the army but Sydonay blocks him, choosing to attack by himself. After Sydonay destroys the Outlaw, Stolas looks on as it burns.[2]

After the battle which resulted in the destruction of the Shanghai Outlaw, Stolas returns to Seireiden for the ceremony for Bal Masqué's new Leader. At the entrance hall, Pirsoyn comes up to him and asks if he was here for the Leader's appearance, to which Stolas responds that he is under the General's orders. As he asks where Ribesal is, the Lord appears before him and complains about their new Leader being a Mystes. Stolas offers to make an appeal that some of the Bal Masqué's operatives have concerns, but Ribesal states that he has a better plan. Stolas has his concerns for the plan, which is for Ribesal to challenge Yūji. Yūji arrives, and Stolas watches him defeat Ribesal. He is later seen watching a projection of Dantalion.[3] Afterwards, he goes to report to Sydonay about the present Leader of Bal Masqué.

Biding Time Arc[]

Stolas attends Bel-Peol's strategy meeting at Seireiden with Mammon.[4]

Stolas bar

At the Seireiden bar, Stolas drinks with Sydonay, who has not visited the bar in a long time. When Sydonay announces that he will be leaving on a mission, Stolas, along with Purson and Mammon, tells Sydonay that they will do their duty and protect the Trinity. Stolas and the others than listen to Sydonay conversing with Decarabia.[5]

Battle of Seireiden Arc[]

Stolas is in the crowd as Yūji gives a speech before entering the Divine Gate with the Trinity. He and the other Denizens cheer when Decarabia orders them to move out. Stolas leaves to attack Andrei Fortress, a major Outlaw in Romania, as part of Haborym's army. He watches as Haborym has his cannon Rinne rapidly firing at the fortress.[6]

When Seireiden falls down to the ground, Stolas is ordered to transport the army under Haborym's command back to Seireiden. He uses Prozzesion and he and Haborym's army arrive just as Decarabia is defeated and their base about to be overwhelmed.[7]

Stolas leads an army of cannon Rinne as they fire on a group of Flame Haze lead by Samuel Demantius.[8]

Final Battle of Misaki City Arc[]

As Kazumi and Yūji arrive on the roof of Misaki Municipal High School, Stolas, along with Sydonay, Pirsoyn, Ribesal, Orobas, Leraje, Bel-Peol, Haborym, and Mammon, line up around a carpet to greet her. The carpet leads to Seireiden.[9]

Yuji casts a black Fūzetsu over Misaki City as Stolas and the other members of Bal Masqué watch him and Kazumi ascend to Seireiden.[10]

After Xanadu is created, Stolas, along with Barma, Orobas, Leraje, Haborym, and Ose meet Bel-Peol, Sydonay and the Snake of the Festival at the Seireiden shrine, Saishuku no Shadan. The Snake of the Festival tells the group to live on in the new world and Stolas flies up to Xanadu's entrance along with Haborym, Leraje, Orobas, Ose and Barma before being converted into Power of Existence.[11]

In the fourteenth episode, Stolas is shown along with other Bal Masqué members in a montage during a Naze Nani Shana-tan class when Bel-Peol explains that their character designs were tweaked for the third season of the anime because they were too "cute".[13]

When they reach their destination, Stolas will spout out light indigo-colored iron sand to envelop the birds, which will change them back to their normal appearance. When Crimson Lords stay in this appearance, their existence becomes very small and hard to distinguish.[7] Also, Stolas chants an incantation during the spell's activation.

Trivia[]

  • Stolas' appearance is mostly the same as the demon his name derives from: Stolas of the Ars Goetia. The design of the demon is combined with Xingtian, a headless giant who was defeated by the Yellow Emperor who, interestingly, once defeated Chi You. Moreover, in Shakugan no Shana, Chi You and Stolas are in the same organization and battle against the Yellow Emperor himself and his contracted warrior.
  • His favorite food is goose meat, and he usually stays at Seireiden to eat.[15]
