Sophie's Children (ゾフィーの子供たち Zofī no Kodomo-tachi ) is a common term used in later time periods, referring back to the inexperienced Flame Haze who had made contracts with Crimson Lords during the event of Great War. The name comes from them being deployed under the command of Flame Haze Army's supreme general, Sophie Sawallisch.
The only named Sophie's Children in the story is Cecilia Rodrigo.[1]
Background[]
Throughout prolonged fierce battles (beginning with the City Devourer Incident followed by Nachtigall Struggle), a great number of powerful Flame Haze had lost their lives to Töten Glocke. After Asiz's proclamation of the Grand Scheme, many Crimson Denizens with a sense of the impending crisis of the Great Calamity had joined Flame Haze's side and the number of Crimson Lords forming contracts increased.
During the decisive battle at the Brocken Fortress, although Sophie Sawallisch took the role of the supreme commander and the remaining skilled Flame Haze were deployed as executives and division commanders, the vast majority of Flame Haze Army's force only consisted of these newly contracted Flame Haze. They were to fight head-on against Töten Glocke, which had a massive army of over ten thousand.
These hastily created "mass-produced" Flame Haze were too inexperienced that they had not yet honed their unique skills (some were shown being able to cast rudimentary spells like Endan or flight). Thus, they were only treated as strong humans (丈夫な人間 Jōbu na Ningen ) that can only use man-made weapons for group battles. Some of them also were used as logistic supports and liaisons.[2]
Trivia[]
- The concept of Sophie's Children might be the basis for Instant Flame Haze in Kazuma Kamachi's non-canon short story, Prison of Destruction.
