Other World in the Fog I (霧中の異界 I Muchū no Ikai I) is the 53rd chapter of the Shakugan no Shana manga series.
Shana met up with Yūji and they discussed how to deal with the approaching Denizen and the fog which covered the city.
Summary[]
Shana embarrassed.
After the confrontation with Yoshida, Shana headed towards the roof where Yūji was. Yūji had heard her yelling that she wouldn't lose and thought that a Denizen was in the schoolyard, but an embarrassed Shana told him that it was okay and that there was no Denizen nearby. Shana explained that the Fūzetsu-like fog was caused by an approaching presence, while another extremely large presence was fighting in the city. Yūji sensed that Margery was fighting against the big presence. They were dealing with at least two Denizens, and Shana opted to take out the presence approaching them. Alastor assumed that the Denizen was an Unrestricted Spell Master who was manipulating the environment and told Shana to be careful. Since there was no point in the Fūzetsu-like spell being that big, Yūji considered that it could be a trap. Alastor didn't know of the spell and thought that the Denizen had crossed over to this world in recent times.

Shana told Yūji to hide in the school. She didn't want him to go with her as it would be a straight-up battle. Yūji asked if there was anything he could do and Shana explained that she didn't want Yūji to go because she knew nothing about this Denizen and might not be able to protect him. He would be extinguished if he took an attack that Azure couldn't block. Alastor agreed with Shana, but he began to explain to Yūji that the scale of a phenomena that a Denizen could create depended on its existence. The vast Fūzetsu-like space was larger in scale and more complicated than the one when Alastor had manifested, and he believed that due to the small presence they felt from the Denizen, it wouldn't have enough power to create the phenomenon. Yūji understood what Alastor was saying; the Denizen was maintaining the fog with a Treasure Tool or a special Unrestricted Spell. Shana tasked Yūji with investigating it, as a Treasure Tool or Unrestricted Spell for that purpose could be deployed somewhere in that space, and she figured they wouldn't expect a Torch to move around in the Fūzetsu. Shana confirmed with Yūji that he could sense Power of Existence and when a Denizen was approaching, and would leave Yūji to deal with what he found and how to tell them. Alastor stated that this task was only for precaution and would be dangerous, as they didn't know the spell's effects, and there could be Rinne present. Yūji remembered his first encounter with Friagne's two Rinne, but was ready to face the danger.
Yūji noticed the frozen Ike still on the roof and asked Shana if she would protect the school and everyone, and she promised to do her best. Yūji asked for a reward if he was useful, and Shana was reminded of Yūji saying he would do his best when she showed him the view of the river. Shana thought about why Yūji was trying so hard; it wasn't for the city or his friends, but him carrying out his vow from that morning; he was doing it for her. Shana then thought about the act of making a vow, kissing, which Chigusa had talked about, and imagined kissing Yūji. Embarrassed, she started yelling at Yūji and told him not to expect rewards for things he hadn't done yet. Yūji left and Shana leapt forth, planning to engage the Denizen before they reached the school.
The presence, which was actually the two Denizens Sorath and Tiriel, continued their approach.
