Duel in the Rain II (雨中の決闘 II Uchū no Kettō II?) is the 43rd chapter of the Shakugan no Shana manga series.

Sorath devoured the thugs. Meanwhile, class 1-2 began playing dodgeball matches.

Summary[]

The thugs wondered when Sydonay had gotten behind them. Sydonay told Tiriel that they were still within the range of her Cradle Garden's effect, that he was only hired to protect them from Flame Haze, and that Sorath would be fine. However, Tiriel didn't like filthy insects like the thugs touching Sorath. Sorath asked if he could eat the thugs and got Tiriel's permission, with the thugs again being unable to comprehend his speech. As Sydonay apologized to the thugs about them not understanding Sorath due to him being unable to use Tatsui no Gen, Sorath donned his battle armor and cleaved all of the thugs in two with his massive sword. He returned to wearing his usual suit and began eating the dismembered thugs. Sorath left behind enough Power of Existence so that Torches of the thugs could be made, receiving praise from Tiriel. He had done so because they might be noticed otherwise, hindering his desire for a sword better than his current one, Blutsauger. Sydonay said that he didn't think the sword needed to be replaced after having grabbed one of the dismembered thugs, which surprised Tiriel as she hadn't seen him move. As the thug was still alive, Sydonay told him that due to their circumstances, they couldn't have used a Fūzetsu to give him an instant death. Sydonay transformed his mouth and swallowed the thug whole.

The group had come to Japan because Sorath could feel where the Nietono no Shana, the sword that he desired, was located due to his "Olfactory Sense of Desire". That was Sorath's nature, and Tiriel's nature was the "Doting Embrace"; going along with Sorath in order to fulfill his desires. Tiriel warned Sydonay to not be negligent again. She talked about how the Flame Haze who possessed the Nietono no Shana and was referred to by the sword's name was in Japan and how they had taken the sword from the "Monster Torch" Tenmoku Ikko after defeating him. She figured this Flame Haze was powerful and thus had hired Sydonay as a bodyguard. Sydonay reminded her that he had previously protected the siblings from the "Manipulator of Objects" in Hong Kong. Before they departed to look for the sword, Tiriel asked Sorath to share the Power of Existence he had consumed, and they did so by kissing. Sydonay created Torches of the thugs from the Power of Existence Sorath had left behind, and the Torches walked out of the alleyway.

During Phys Ed. class, some girls were trying to explain the rules of dodgeball to Shana, as they were about to play. The teams were decided by the order of the class roll, with Ike and Ogata on team A, Yūji and Satō on team B, Tanaka on team C, Shana on team D, and Yoshida on team E. Satō was excited, as the first match was team A against team B. Yūji was on the field watching Shana surrounded by girls explaining the game's rules to her. As the match started, Yūji was angered when a male classmate tried to talk to Shana, and was hit in the face by Ike's throw. The teacher stopped the game to see to Yūji, who got up but showed signs of a slight concussion. The teacher made Yūji sit out of the game, and the girls around Shana voiced their disapproval of him, saying they had thought he was cool before. Team A won, and the next match was between teams C and D. Tanaka and Shana faced off, with Tanaka wanting revenge for a previous softball match. They threatened each other before the teacher started the match.

Quotes[]

  • Tiriel: "Beetles like these touching my Onii-sama cannot be allowed! Argh, how disgusting! Look at what they've done to the clothes I picked out... it's ridiculous just how much these beetles don't know their places!!"
  • Sydonay (to the thugs): "Sorry that you can't quite hear him. Sorath's just a boy who can't even use Tatsui no Gen. No, dying without knowing your sad fates, might actually be fortunate."
  • Sydonay (to the last thug): "It's unfortunate that you've eluded an instant death. If we had laid a Fūzetsu you guys would've been devoured without knowing it, but we have our reasons. Please, lament your misfortune."
  • Tanaka: "Heheheh, I'm getting you back for striking me out in softball! Don't cry Hirai-chan, you'll make me the bad guy!"
Shana: "Hmph, you're going to lose anyway so why don't you surrender before you get tired needlessly. I'll hit you gently."
