Shana IV (シャナ IV ) is the eleventh chapter of the Shakugan no Shana manga series.
Yūji noticed something strange about the Torches and Alastor explained the possibility of City Devourer activating.
Summary[]

The "Weaver of Coffins" and the name "City Devourer".
It was getting dark and Yūji and Shana were walking through the city after having left the bridge. Shana took out her twin-tails and said that they should still be careful. Yūji noticed something about the Torches across the road. He figured that he could now tell, like Shana could, how old they were by the strange pulsation they had, but Shana didn't know anything about the pulsing. Yūji explained that the flames of old Torches were swaying slowly and the flames of new ones were swaying faster, but both Shana and Alastor couldn't see it. Shana suspected that this ability of Yūji's was due to the Treasure Tool inside of him. Alastor asked if all the Torches were pulsing, which Yūji confirmed. Shana thought it might be to do with the large number of Torches in the city. Alastor told them of a Lord who created a big Distortion in the West a long time ago by putting a mechanism in the Torches that he had devoured. The incident that the Lord, the "Weaver of Coffins", had caused led to the creation of many Flame Haze to oppose him. The incident was known as the "City Devourer", with the name shocking Yūji.

Yūji glad he could be of use.
Alastor continued his explanation as they entered a supermarket and Shana began shopping for snacks. The "Weaver of Coffins" had weaved "Key Threads" into the Torches he had eaten, which let him decompose the Torches and turn them back into Power of Existence. After devouring 10% of the population of the city he was in, he had activated the mechanism. At once, all the Torches had lost their function as replacements and reverted into Power of Existence. The connection that they had to the world was suddenly all lost, which caused a giant fluctuation that swept in people and objects. Yūji understood the incident, that Torches were meant to soften the blow of someone no longer existing by slowly reducing their presence, and a sudden removal of all of them in one city would completely wreck the city with inconsistencies. Alastor stated that after City Devourer's activation, the whole city was swallowed up and converted into an enormous amount of high purity Power of Existence. The "Weaver of Coffins" had found a way for Denizens to be nourished with things other than humans. After a long battle between Lords and Flame Haze, the "Weaver of Coffins" was finally destroyed. Even if the chances of Friagne planning another City Devourer were slim, they couldn't afford to risk it. Yūji thought of his mother and friends who might perish and asked Shana if all they could do was to wait for Friagne to move, but she said that Yūji was the bait; as the "Hunter" who loved Treasure Tools, he wouldn't risk getting Yūji caught up in the City Devourer. This made Yūji glad, as he would be of use in stopping Friagne.

Shana's melonpan proclamation.
In the melonpan corner of the supermarket, Shana was trying to choose one. Yūji picked one, which was melon flavored, but she rejected it. She proclaimed that they were called melonpan because of their appearance and having them melon flavored was heresy, and she earned claps from other customers.

Yūji and Shana being found.
When they reached his house, Yūji sat down at the side of the house, and Shana joined him. He planned to hide until it gets late because he didn't want his mother to get caught up in something like the battle yesterday. Shana took out some candy from her shopping bag and Yūji asked for one, but she refused to give him any. They argued until Yūji's mother overheard and approached them. She called him "Yū-chan", leading to some teasing from Shana. Yūji tried to talk to Alastor, but the Lord teased him as well.
At the Yoshida Residence, Kazumi was studying when her little brother passed on a phone call to her. It was Ike, who was apologizing for suggesting they look for Yūji and Hirai, as it caused her pain. He thought that Yūji would have told him if he was dating Hirai. Ike tried to cheer Kazumi up because he had seen that she was depressed, and she thanked him. She felt that she had spent time with Yūji that day. At the end of the conversation, Ike told Kazumi to keep trying.
