Shana Glossary[1] (「灼眼のシャナ」用語集 "Shakugan no Shana" Yōgoshū ) is a glossary of terms used in the first two seasons of the Shakugan no Shana anime series published on pages 30-31 of Shakugan no Shana Final Guidebook. Though the terms were mostly ordered based on their first appearance in the anime series, some terms such as Kaikin were featured based on their first light novel appearance.

- Crimson Realm: Another world which exists adjacent to this world and cannot be reached.
- Crimson Denizen: The general term for the inhabitants of the Crimson Realm, another world. They are also called "Denizens".
- Crimson Lord: Crimson Denizens who possess tremendous power.
- Rinne: Servants of Crimson Denizens that have been infused with Power of Existence.
- Power of Existence: A fundamental energy needed to exist in this world. Denizens materialize by stealing this power from humans, who are existences close to themselves.
- Flame Haze: Wielders of extraordinary powers who fight Crimson Denizens that disturb the balance of this world. They fight using extraordinary powers granted by the Crimson Lord they contracted with.
- "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" (『炎髪灼眼の討ち手』 ): The Flame Haze contracted to "Flame of Heaven" Alastor. A girl with crimson eyes and blazing hair, she was named "Shana" by Yūji Sakai.
- Nietono no Shana: The drawn ōdachi sword that Shana has. A sturdy excellent grade sword that cannot be interfered with by any powers or Unrestricted Spells, it is also the source of her name.
- Yogasa: The black clothes Shana wears. Its shape and size can be freely changed, and objects can be stored inside it.
- "Flame of Heaven" Alastor: The True Demon God of the Crimson Realm, he is the God of Retribution who governs judgment and condemnation.
- Divine Vessel: The vessel through which a Crimson Lord contracted to a Flame Haze can express their consciousness.
- "Cocytus" (“コキュートス” ): Alastor's Divine Vessel. A black sphere adorned by crossing gold rings and fastened to a silver chain.
- Unrestricted Spell: Techniques which bring about mysterious phenomena that are impossible in reality through the use of Power of Existence.
- Fūzetsu: A dome-shaped space detached from the flow of cause and effect of the world, its interior is frozen and it is concealed from the outside. One of the most fundamental Unrestricted Spells, Denizens use it to conceal themselves when they devour Power of Existence, and Flame Haze deploy it when fighting Denizens.
- Treasure Tool: Tools that exhibit mysterious powers when loaded with Power of Existence.
- Torch: A substitute created from the embers of a human who had their Power of Existence devoured and has died. Along with the depletion of their remaining power, their very existence, including memories of them, inconspicuously disappears.
- Mystes: A Torch that houses a Treasure Tool within its body.
- Reiji Maigo: A treasure among treasures for the Crimson Realm, it restores its host's Power of Existence every night at midnight.
- "Hunter" Friagne: A Lord among the five most powerful in modern times and famous for being a Treasure Tool collector.
- Marianne: A Rinne created by Friagne, as well as his lover.
- Trigger Happy: A revolver-shaped Treasure Tool that forcibly awakens a Lord when their contracted Flame Haze is shot. It was created to kill Flame Haze.
- Azure: A ring-shaped Treasure Tool that creates a barrier protecting against fire.
- Regular Sharp: A Treasure Tool that takes the shape of cards and can automatically shuffle. It can also be used for attacks by loading it with Power of Existence.
- Dance Party: A handbell-shaped Treasure Tool that makes Rinne explode when they resonate with its sound.
- Bubble Route: Known as the "Weapon-killer", it is a coin-shaped Treasure Tool which turns into a gold chain and entwines around the enemy's weapon.
- City Devourer: An Unrestricted Spell that converts an entire city into a vast amount of Power of Existence.
- Distortion of the World: The Distortion of the entire world, including both this world and the Crimson Realm, which is produced by the over-hunting of Power of Existence. It is said that the Great Calamity will occur if it continues to expand.
- Melonpan (メロンパン ): Shana's favorite food. The correct way of eating it is karikari mofumofu, alternating between the outer and inner parts.
- "Chanter of Elegies" Margery Daw: An Unrestricted Spell Master feared by Denizens as a preeminent killer among Flame Haze.
- Improvisational Poem of Enclosed Killing (『堵殺の即興詩』 ): The general term for the Unrestricted Spells Margery controls through improvisation. They are unleashed through cooperating with Marchosias.
- Toga: The robe of flames worn by Margery, taking the form of a short and stout beast.
- "Claw and Fangs of Violation" Marchosias: The battle-crazy Lord contracted to Margery.
- "Grimoire" (“グリモア” ): Marchosias' Divine Vessel, which takes the shape of a gigantic book.
- The Silver: A mysterious Denizen Margery is hunting as her enemy.
- "Corpse Retriever" Lamies: A small Denizen who goes around collecting Torches that are about to burn out. He is also a skillful Unrestricted Spell Master.
- "Spiral Organ" Leanan-sidhe: The greatest Unrestricted Spell Master of the Crimson Realm, who completed the Fūzetsu.
- Misaki Atrium Arch: The atrium top level of a high-rise building at the back of Misaki City Station. It has an art museum.
- Crystal Altar: A Treasure Tool that reproduces a detailed miniature of a city, inside which the movement of all Power of Existence can be observed. It was created by Snake of the Festival.
- Guren no Sōyoku: Shana's Unrestricted Spell, which manifests the "visualization of flight" on her back as wings of flame.
- Alas Toru-san (アラストオルさん ): The name Yūji's mother Chigusa calls Shana's guardian.
- "He-Who-Loves-Himself" Sorath: The elder brother of the "Aizen Siblings". A young and innocent Denizen who harbors intense materialistic desire.
- Olfactory Sense of Desire: The only Unrestricted Spell Sorath can use, which allows him to sense the location of the things he desires.
- "One-Indulged-in-Love-of-Others" Tiriel: The younger sister of the "Aizen Siblings". A Denizen who dotes on Sorath and devotes herself to granting his desires.
- Doting Embrace (『溺愛の抱擁』 ): Another name for Tiriel, whose essence is her devotion to Sorath.
- Blutsauger: A large sword-shaped Treasure Tool that inflicts unblockable wounds to enemies who touch its blade.
- Cradle Garden: An Unrestricted Spell that creates a barrier filled with fog and severed from the outside world. It can conceal the Presence of Denizens inside and imprison targets.
- Pinion: Tiriel's Rinne, which are created by embedding Unrestricted Spell Insignias inside humans.
- Orgel: A music box-shaped Treasure Tool that can use the Unrestricted Spell Insignia loaded into it endlessly.
- "Thousand Changes" Sydonay: The General of Bal Masqué's Trinity. A powerful Lord who is deeply involved with Margery.
- Kaikin: Defensive Unrestricted Spells cast on a Mystes to protect the Treasure Tool stored inside them.
- "You're not being fair, Yukari-chan." (ゆかりちゃんはずるいよ ): Kazumi Yoshida's declaration of war against Shana.
- Tendōkyū: A moving fortress that floats in the sky and one of the largest Treasure Tools in the world. Created by "Soaring Tower of Quintessence" Gavida, it was the place where Shana was raised when she was young.
- Crypta: A bubble-like world that covers Tendōkyū, it is an invisible barrier which conceals everything inside and prevents even its existence from being sensed.
- "Manipulator of Objects" Wilhelmina Carmel: One of Shana's foster parents, she is a powerful Flame Haze who exploits her renown of having "Peerless Combatant Skills".
- "Crown-and-Sash of Fantasies" Tiamat: The Lord contracted to Wilhelmina. Robotic and unsociable, she has the nickname "Great River of Reticence".
- "Persona" (“ペルソナ” ): Tiamat's Divine Vessel, which takes the shape of a headdress. During battle, it becomes a mask with countless fluttering Ribbons.
- "Glazed Eyes" Vine: A Jaeger of Bal Masqué, he is a Denizen with high-level perception abilities.
- Jaeger (
捜索猟兵 ): One of the types of soldiers within Bal Masqué, their role is to conduct searches and gather information. - Gordian Knot: Golden key-shaped Treasure Tools created by Bel-Peol. The Unrestricted Spell loaded inside them activates when their owner dies.
- "Commander of Thousand Conquests" Orgon: A Wanderer of Bal Masqué. An Unrestricted Spell Master who specializes in wars of annihilation, he is a Lord known as the "Warmonger".
- Wanderer (
巡回士 ): One of the types of soldiers within Bal Masqué, they are combat personnel. They often mobilize together with a Jaeger. - Legion: The Unrestricted Spell used by Orgon. It creates countless troops made of paper and infused with Power of Existence.
- Tenmoku Ikko: The worst Mystes in history who has slain many Denizens and Flame Haze. With the Nietono no Shana as his core, he wandered in search of a strong person worthy of the Treasure Tool.
- Shiro (シロ ): One of Shana's foster parents, whose appearance was a skeleton. His true identity was Merihim undergoing only minimal Manifestation.
- "Rainbow Wings" Merihim: A powerful Lord who was deeply involved with the previous "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter". One of Töten Glocke's Nine Eternal Divine Scales.
- Rainbow's Heaven Sword: Merihim's Unrestricted Spell referred to as the strongest in its era, it fires a rainbow-colored destructive beam of light.
- Töten Glocke: The largest Denizen group in the Middle Ages, led by the Crimson Lord "Weaver of Coffins" Asiz. They fought in the Great War against the Flame Haze.
- "Pair of Wings" (『両翼』 ): Another name for Merihim and "Ironclad Dragon" Illuyanka, Töten Glocke's strongest generals.
- Previous "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" (先代『炎髪灼眼の討ち手』 ): Shana's predecessor as Alastor's Flame Haze, her name was Mathilde Saint-Omer. She was the strongest Flame Haze in her era, as well as Alastor's lover.
- Great War: The largest scale war in history, fought between Töten Glocke and the Flame Haze in Middle Ages Europe.
- Bal Masqué: The largest scale Crimson Denizen group. Their goals are the Grand Order and the return of their leader, Snake of the Festival.
- Trinity: Bal Masqué's upper echelon. Made up of 3 Lords, the "Chief of Staff", the "General", and the "Priestess".
- "Arbiter of Reverse Reasoning" Bel-Peol: The Chief of Staff of Bal Masqué's Trinity. The "Mysterious Three-Eyed Woman" feared since ancient times for her ingenious schemes.
- "Master Throne" Hecate: The Priestess of Bal Masqué's Trinity. A small and expressionless girl, she pledges absolute loyalty to their Leader, Snake of the Festival.
- "Mobilizer of Ceremonial Equipment" Khamsin Nbh'w: Contrary to his appearance of a young boy, he is one of the Oldest Flame Haze. One of the Tuners, he is also feared as the Demolisher.
- "Steadfast Sharp Peak" Behemoth: The Lord contracted to Khamsin.
- "Sabia" (“サービア” ): Behemoth's Divine Vessel, a glass ornamental cord tied around Khamsin's left hand.
- Tuning: Unrestricted Spells used to restore the world after it has been distorted by the arrival of Denizens.
- Mekest: An iron rod-shaped Treasure Tool about 3 meters long. It becomes the handle of a gigantic whip.
- Rubble Giant: A giant constructed from rubble, it is Khamsin's battle form. Its official name is "Ceremonial Equipment".
- Ra's Throwing Stone: An Unrestricted Spell where the Rubble Giant attacks by launching the rubble connected to the tip of Mekest.
- Qadesh's Blood Seal: An Unrestricted Spell used to control the Rubble Giant.
- Qadesh's Heart Chamber: An Unrestricted Spell which creates the "heart" that will be the cockpit and reactor for the Rubble Giant. It is also used in Tuning.
- Jettatura: A monocle-shaped Treasure Tool which allows even humans to perceive Power of Existence.
- Misago Festival: A summer festival which takes place in Misaki City.
- "Professor" (“教授” ): Another name for the Crimson Lord "Seeking Researcher" Dantalion, a mad scientist.
- Domino: Dantalion's Rinne, its official name is "Crystallization of Self-Research Excellent 28 - Cantate Domino".
- Whole Sacred Chapel: An Unrestricted Spell that will assimilate Hecate and the Reiji Maigo and extract infinite Power of Existence.
- Random Transfer (無作為転移 ): The phenomenon where the Treasure Tool within a Mystes is transferred to another Torch when the Mystes is destroyed.
- Seireiden: A moving fortress which forms a pair with Tendōkyū, it is one of the largest Treasure Tools in the world. It is also the stronghold of Bal Masqué.
- Fountain of Existence: Refers to the vast amount of Power of Existence created by the Whole Sacred Chapel.
- Tenpa Jōsai: A secret technique only Alastor is permitted, it is a Divine Summoning which manifests Alastor himself.
- "Village of Jestful Slumber" Mare: A small Denizen parasitizing a Mystes. She normally acts while borrowing the appearance of the Mystes. Her true form is similar to a clown.
- Gemeinde: Mare's Unrestricted Spell, which creates a dream world based on the enemy's memories.
- Papagena: A suzu-shaped Treasure Tool possessed by Mare, which shoots multiple Endan.
- "Gravel of Dashing Crook" Kasha: An "up-and-coming" Denizen who controls the Treasure Tool Chorde.
- Chorde: A Treasure Tool in the shape of a set of rings that can be freely controlled by loading them with Power of Existence.
- Outlaw: Organizations that support Flame Haze. They carry out exchanges of information, travel arrangements, raising of funds, and cover-ups of incidents.
- Ōto Fancy Park: A theme park in Ōto City, which is next to Misaki City.
- "Completely Piercing Cavern" Annaberg: A Denizen who harbors interest in the advancement of civilizations created by humans.
- "Acceleration of Civilization" (『文明の加速』 ): Annaberg's idea of accelerating the advancement of human civilization through sabotage.
- Révolution: A group of Denizens who aimed to make the existence of the Crimson Realm known to humans. They were active from the latter half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century.
- "Leader of Spirits" Yurii Chvojka: A young Flame Haze who crossed over to America as an immigrant.
- Reigun: Yurii's Unrestricted Spell, which controls and manipulates small animals and insects.
- "President of Reptiles" Valac: The powerful Lord contracted to Yurii.
- "Hoverla" (『ゴベルラ』 )[† 1]: Valac's Divine Vessel, which takes the form of a dagger.
- Kraken: The general term for Denizens who attack humans at sea. They were very active around the 19th century, and were annihilated in the beginning of the 20th century.
- "Summoner of Star River" EastEdge: A Flame Haze who manages the New York Outlaw, he is one of The Four Gods of Earth.
- Seishū Festival: Misaki Municipal High School's school festival. It is held for two days in the first weekend of October.
- Costume Parade (仮装パレード ): An opening parade in which representatives of each first-year class wear costumes and walk in procession within the city, promoting the Seishū Festival. A contest is also held.
- "Colorful Wave" Pheles: One half of the "Engage Link", she is a Lord who uses wind Unrestricted Spells.
- "Eternal Lover" Johann: One half of the "Engage Link", he is the Mystes who created the Reiji Maigo as well as a talented Unrestricted Spell Master.
- "Engage Link" (『約束の二人』 ): The nickname Pheles and Johann call themselves.
- Kaze no Tenrin: Pheles' Unrestricted Spell Insignia, which searches for targets by touching humans and Torches.
- Inverna: Pheles' Unrestricted Spell, which controls the storm enveloping her body's surroundings.
- "Destructive Blade" Sabrac: A freelance "Assassin" who accepts requests to kill or guard people, he is a powerful Lord who has slaughtered many Flame Haze.
- Psalm of the Grand Order: An Unrestricted Spell Insignia needed for Bal Masqué to fulfill its goal, the Grand Order. It has also been driven into the Reiji Maigo by Sabrac.
- Tartaros: Bel-Peol's chain-shaped Treasure Tool which can sever all causalities.
- Faux Vessel: Refers to Hecate's substitute body, whose true identity was concealed by Tartaros.
- Trigon: The khakkhara-shaped Treasure Tool Hecate possesses. It is also a Treasure Tool for fulfilling the Grand Order.
- Aster: Hecate's Unrestricted Spell that fires balls of light like shooting stars.
- "Tempest Hoof" Fecor: A Lord who is Bel-Peol's Adjutant and has been entrusted with the defense of Seireiden, Bal Masqué's stronghold.
- Magnesia: Fecor's Unrestricted Spell which freely controls minute particles, laying out an impregnable defensive formation.
- Giralda: The Greek cross-shaped Treasure Tool Pheles entrusted to Yoshida. With Kaze no Tenrin loaded inside it, it can summon Pheles when Power of Existence is loaded into it.
- "Performer of Depressing Dreams" Dorel Kubelík: The Flame Haze who created the Outlaw system in Europe. He is also the supervisor of the Outlaw Dorel Party.
- "Assembly-and-Division of Four" Zarovee: A Jaeger of Bal Masqué. He has the power to split into 5 people.
- "Howling Fang" Bifrons: A Wanderer of Bal Masqué. He has been paired with Zarovee for a long time.
- Tarnkappe: A rag-shaped Treasure Tool that can cut off a Denizen's Presence.
- Stigma: Sabrac's Unrestricted Spell, it prevents wounds inflicted by his swords from healing. It demonstrates Sabrac's mysterious and undefeated strength.
- Madder Red Surging Wave: Refers to Sabrac's attacks, where flames with countless swords concealed within strike like tsunamis.
- Statue of Pride: A plan to fulfill the Grand Order, in which a Crimson Denizen is created in this world.
- Tyrant: The giant wearing plate armor that is the core of the Statue of Pride. It is also Margery's enemy, the Silver.
