Rift Crossing (狭間渡り Hazama-watari?), or Rift Crossing Technique (狭間渡りの術 Hazama-watari no Jutsu?) is one of the most rudimentary Unrestricted Spells any Crimson Denizens can use in order to cross over between worlds.[1] It was developed by a Crimson Lord soon after Denizens became aware of this world.

At the beginning, Rift Crossing allowed Crimson Denizens to cross over from the Crimson Realm to this world and vice-versa. After Xanadu has been created, Rift Crossing can only be used to cross over between the Crimson Realm and this New World.

Background[]

When crossing over, the Denizen resonates with something on the other world, which guides them across like a sign or a rope. When crossing from the Crimson Realm to this world, that resonance is with "human emotions" (人間らの感情?), and from this world to the Crimson Realm it is "the swirling power of comrades" (同胞らの渦巻く力?).

The secret spell Eternal Pitfall cuts off the ability to resonate, expelling the target of the spell in the Rift Between Both Worlds. They become unable to find any signs in either world, and are left to wander the Rift Between Both Worlds for eternity. Therefore, the space known as the Rift Between Both Worlds is also sometimes referred to as the "Eternal Pitfall".

Before the creation of the New World Xanadu, the Rift Between Both Worlds was turbulent due to Distortions. Denizens crossing the rift were like boats out at sea during storms, and there were many who were caught in Distortions and got hurt, were extinguished, or became stranded in the rift. Due to this, the success of rift crossing, be it a Denizen or a Lord, was left to fate.

After Xanadu was created, Denizens stopped crossing over to this world. The direction of Aggregate Will resonating was fixed to only being between the Crimson Realm and Xanadu, making it impossible to cross over to this world.

Cerebus of Rut had tried to use his Unrestricted Spell Stomachion, the rift crossing technique, and the Crystallization of Self-Research Messenger's Dagger to make an imitation of the Divine Gate to usher in Dantalion, who had been expelled to the Rift Between Both Worlds, to the New World Xanadu.[2]
