Papagena (パパゲーナ Papagēna) is the Kagura suzu-shaped Treasure Tool which the Mystes parasitized by "Village of Jestful Slumber" Mare possessed. It consists of three rings with bells hanging from their circumferences connected by a rod, and is about 30cm long.[1]
Background[]
Papagena has the ability to shoot out many, potentially countless[1] Endan at once every time it's swung,[1][2] and it can be used to freely control them.[3] The strength of the Endan are proportionate to how much Power of Existence the user possesses, and therefore they are of little strength when Papagena was used by Mare.[2]
In the game, Mare only used Papagena within the Unrestricted Spell Gemeinde, where she could do things she was otherwise not capable of, so it is not known whether Mare could really wield Papagena. In addition to Endan, she could make Papagena shoot out bells and feathers, as well as bells which explode after a period of time. When activating Gemeinde, Mare used Papagena as a catalyst to increase her concentration,[3] though this wasn't essential to Gemeinde's activation.
It is unknown what happened to Papagena after Mare was destroyed.
In the anime[]
In the anime, Papagena also acted as the starting point from which Mare could deploy Gemeinde. It was a Treasure Tool she wielded in order to use her unique Unrestricted Spells.[4]
Trivia[]
- Papagena is a character in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute. The protagonist, Papageno, was able to summon her by ringing his magic bells.
