Notburga (ノトブルガ Notoburuga ) is a character created by Kazuma Kamachi for his short story, Prison of Destruction. She is a Flame Haze with the title "Hidden Pursuer" (潜める追っ手 Hisomeru Otte ) and is contracted to "Domain of Esoteric Theory" Ratziel.
Appearance[]
Notburga's appearance is that of a young girl around 140 cm tall, with her hair composing of blonde and brown hair mixed together. Her skin is so white that it can look transparent, and her face is good-looking. She wears a coat and trousers which are both black, as well as gloves and boots. The clothes don't hide the curves of Notburga's figure in the night, but she had a gruesome beauty to her.[2] Notburga has a surprisingly deep voice.[3]
Personality[]
Notburga loved a certain Crimson Lord immensely, spending 500 years developing a way to save them. Though it was likely that the Lord had perished long ago, she couldn't give up searching for them.[4] In her search, she was able to kill Flame Haze with her claws in a casual fashion, like pulling a Treasure Tool out of a Mystes.[5] Notburga was observant when encountering Yūji Sakai, but was also cautious to the point that she failed to notice how pale he was.[3] After being defeated, she told Yūji her motives out of concern for him.
Background[]
Notburga had loved a Crimson Lord who had become well known before the Great War of the Middle Ages due to researching an Unrestricted Spell which would allow coming and going between this world and the Crimson Realm. However that Lord was forcibly contracted and sealed inside a human using the Treasure Tool Prison of Destruction. Ever since, Notburga's purpose had been to search for the Lord and release them.
When the Instant Flame Haze formed from Prison of Destruction began to repeatedly misuse Power of Existence, a military force was formed to destroy them. Notburga fought alongside "Mobilizer of Ceremonial Equipment" Khamsin Nbh'w as one of the subjugators. She was able to destroy the root cause of the incident, the Prison of Destruction, and fled.[6] As this didn't remove the contracts of the Instant Flame Haze, she began making improvements to her Divine Vessel Release of Leonardus so that she could use it to pry open Flame Haze and take out their contracted Lord. For the next 500 years Notburga developed Release of Leonardus along with the Unrestricted Spell Nobiliacum, which she would use to free her beloved Lord from the Instant Flame Haze.
Plot[]
Prison of Destruction[]
After completing the development of Nobiliacum, Notburga began her search by systematically prying open Flame Haze, and in just a week she had murdered around 50 Flame Haze, including "Reciter of the End" Syrus Lellis in Ōto City.

After learning about the killings from Outlaw, Khamsin sent the Mystes Yūji Sakai to destroy Notburga. Though Yūji was equipped with Nietono no Shana, bookmarks from Margery Daw, and ribbons from Wilhelmina Carmel, Notburga had the advantage in their fight due to her Flame Haze strength. However, Yūji's quick wit created an opening and Notburga was defeated with the Nietono no Shana. Notburga told Yūji why she had been destroying Flame Haze before losing consciousness. Ratziel was going to use his powers to destroy Notburga's Vessel in order to manifest, but Yūji convinced him not to.
Afterwards, Notburga was treated by Misaki City's Flame Haze. Unbeknownst to her, Khamsin had captured the Instant Flame Haze with her beloved Lord inside. He planned to learn Nobiliacum from her and release the Lord, and would tell Notburga about it when she had gone down the right path.[7]
Relationships[]
Ratziel[]
Ratziel cared deeply for Notburga, lamenting not being able to help her find her beloved Lord and pitying her for the path her life had taken.[8] Ratziel tried to use his power to kill Notburga by manifesting in order to free her from her path, but was persuaded by Yūji to seek a new path together with her.[9]
Khamsin Nbh'w[]
Notburga had fought together with Khamsin during the Prison of Destruction Incident and was aware of how frightening he was.[10]
Powers and Abilities[]
Notburga is extremely fast; as she initiated the fight against Yūji, she ran up to him in an instant without him noticing.[6]
Release of Leonardus (レオナルドゥスの解放 Reonarudusu no Kaihō ): Notburga's Divine Vessel, which is endowed with a portion of Ratziel's Flame Haze-killing powers. After asking Ratziel for it, a thin chain rises up from the ground beneath Notburga and twines around all of her fingers repeatedly to form iron claws shaped like dull swords.[1][11] The iron claws almost reach the ground[11] and are about 70 cm long.[12] Just by hearing or seeing the glittering of the iron claws, a Flame Haze's Divine Vessel undergoes immense pressure, and the flow of Power of Existence from the Divine Vessel to the Flame Haze reverses. As a result, the Flame Haze either self-destructs as they try to use Power of Existence, or they would be unable to use Power of Existence out of fear of exploding, and in that state Notburga would attack with the claws, exploding them from the inside. The result was said to resemble Friagne's Treasure Tool Trigger Happy. This would also forcibly wake and unleash the contracted Crimson Lord. Release of Leonardus had no effect on people who didn't have Divine Vessels,[11] but is unable to be dealt with by a Flame Haze and would certainly lead to their defeat. Its ability doesn't affect Notburga herself. The original effect of Release of Leonardus before its improvements hadn't been for killing[6] and Notburga uses an Unrestricted Spell to improve it to bring out Ratziel's power.[11] The claws can be reverted back to regular chains if repelled by an insignia.[13]
Unrestricted Spells[]
Notburga activated a Fūzetsu during her Flame Haze killings and before her fight with Yūji. According to Yūji, her Fūzetsu was more complicated than Shana's but more crude than Margery's. However, every character and line in its insignia had a gruesome feel to it.[1]
