Maelstrom of Warfare (闘争の渦 Tōsō no Uzu) is the term used to refer to places (usually cities) that are fated to draw in beings related to the Truth of This World, both Flame Haze and Crimson Denizens alike.[1]
At times, this happens when Crimson Denizens attack and consume humans and attract the attention of Flame Haze. The conflict brought up by the encounter between Denizens and Flame Haze would cause destruction to both the humans caught in the crossfire and the place where the engagement started. This forms a vicious cycle which continues until either side is completely expired.
Whichever faction wins, the place of conflict would have a large amount of Distortions as a result of many Torches created. This phenomenon is not reversible, but the effects of the distortions can be dampened by the ceremony of Tuning, which Flame Haze like Khamsin Nbh'w specialize in.
Background[]
The city of Osterode in Germany has been referred to as a Maelstrom of Warfare; a place of origin that triggered a chain reaction which led to the Great War.[2]
Misaki City has also been referred to as one after Margery Daw discussed with Alastor and raised the similarity between it and the city of Osterode[2]:
- First, there is a certain Crimson Denizen who flashily creates a mass creation of Torches.[2] In both events, they aim to activate the City Devourer.
- Denizens get lured in by the large Distortion.[2]
- Flame Haze show up to hunt them.[2]
- Their clashes escalate and Denizens begin devouring people indiscriminately.[2]
- Both sides keep gathering more forces.[2]
- Finally, a certain powerful Denizen and their party set their sights on the Distortion and devise a scheme which threatens the world.[2] These schemes are Töten Glocke's Grand Scheme and Bal Masqué's Grand Order, respectively. Although the latter is unknown to Flame Haze during the discussion.
