Humanize (人化 Jinka?) is an Unrestricted Spell used by Crimson Denizens that transforms their manifested form from "an appearance by their true nature (本性 Honshō?)" into "a human appearance that aligns with that true nature".[1]

Background[]

While this spell allows Crimson Denizens to blend in with humans, their appearance cannot drastically deviate from their Essence (本質 Honshitsu?). For instance, altering facial features or body shape beyond what is appropriate that forces an unnatural transformation would consume a proportional amount of Power of Existence.[1][2]

Though it is a basic Unrestricted Spell, maintaining a form which is slightly detached from one's essence imposes a minor burden; if Denizens let their guard down or become too relaxed, Humanize spell may falter and cause their outline to distort. To minimize this burden, or perhaps to utilize features like wings or tentacles that their humanized form lack, a number of Denizens choose to dispel their humanized form during battle. Examples include the Kraken Rahab and Denizen passengers while boarding the Hyakki Yakou's vehicles.

In ancient times, Denizens who crossed over to this world often manifested in forms that directly reflected their true nature; this was evident during the Great War. However, as humanity has advanced and developed a highly sophisticated civilization over time, many Denizens who once scorned humans, began to admire them and their culture, leading to more usage of Humanize spell.[3] It is also one of the discoveries made known to every Crimson Denizens in this world by the God of Guidance, Shaher.[4]

In the modern era, nearly all Denizens assume human forms through this spell.[3] However, some Denizens still regard manifesting in one's true form as a mark of dignity and status, with Stolas being one of them.

Some Denizens, like Orobas, shift between both forms depending on combat needs; he uses his horse form for movement and a human form for wielding weapons. Others, like Ribesal, rarely assume human form, finding it lacking in presence; he once explained to Yūji Sakai that a Denizen’s humanized form seems to be influenced by the appearance of the people in the first country they set foot in after crossing from the Crimson Realm. This remark came as he, in his humanized form, expressed his eagerness to enjoy Japanese cuisine in the new world Xanadu.[5]
