Part 5: "Colorful Wave" Pheles, Kaze no Tenrin (第5回「"彩飄"フィレス」「風の転輪」, Dai 5-kai "Saihyō" Firesu 'Kaze no Tenrin') is the fifth episode of Friagne and Marianne no Naze Nani Shana! covering the second season of the anime series, and seventeenth overall. It was released on the fifth Shakugan no Shana Second DVD volume.

Summary

Marianne wanted Friagne to talk about the Promised Pair, the "Engage Link". Friagne thought the two were strange, leading Marianne to ask if they were famous. Even among cases of Crimson Denizens and humans falling in love with each other, "Colorful Wave" Pheles and "Eternal Lover" Johann were especially well-known. Marianne took note from Friagne's words that there were other Denizens and humans who had fallen in love with each other. Friagne explained that the minds or hearts of Denizens and humans were pretty much the same and there were no differences in the emotions each felt, such as joy, anger, grief, pleasure, and love. However, there were many cases of humans rejecting Denizens who loved them because of their differences. The wall between different species, and especially between predators and prey, was thick and high.

Marianne saw how Johann could be regarded as strange for requiting Pheles' feelings for him. Johann had a unique upbringing so it wasn't a normal love story, and above all, he wasn't an ordinary human. He was a Mystes, a Traveling Treasure House, who had transcended his human self thanks to a Treasure Tool. That Treasure Tool was the Reiji Maigo inside Yūji Sakai, who Friagne and Marianne were familiar with. It was an eternal engine which replenished consumed Power of Existence every night at midnight. This Treasure Tool was created when Johann, a human being whose time was finite, and Pheles, a Crimson Lord, wished to be together for eternity.

Marianne felt empathy for the pair but wondered why the Reiji Maigo was now within Yūji Sakai. Several months ago, the Engage Link were blindsided by "Destructive Blade" Sabrac, the assassin who had been after them. Pheles suffered serious injuries but was able to save Johann from the verge of death by sealing him in the Reiji Maigo and making it undergo Random Transfer so that he would escape. This resulted in the birth of the Mystes Yūji Sakai. Marianne commented on how many threads of destiny were entwined in places and times they didn't know about, and had come together to begin the story. Those threads of destiny had been tied in a way that meant the destruction of Friagne and Marianne, but Friagne couldn't bring himself to condemn Pheles' act because it was one of love.

Friagne wanted to talk about Random Transfer. Treasure Tools are transferred into one of the countless Torches scattered around the world, so how did Pheles locate the Reiji Maigo after only a few months? Marianne had researched this and knew the answer; it was due to the effect of Pheles' unique Unrestricted Spell Kaze no Tenrin. Kaze no Tenrin had four aspects to it. Firstly, it spreads around the world through contact with humans and Torches. When it reaches its target, it creates a puppet of the user which possesses part of the user's consciousness. Thirdly, the puppet collects information and prepares the situation around it for the user's main body. Lastly, while the puppet does that, it acts as a signpost for the faraway main body. Marianne concluded that Kaze no Tenrin was an Unrestricted Spell which excelled in searching. Therefore, Pheles may have used Random Transfer so Johann would escape because she knew she could use Kaze no Tenrin to find him. Friagne was very impressed with Marianne's explanation and had nothing to add. Marianne felt she couldn't keep being a burden to Friagne so she had studied hard, though Friagne had never thought of her as such and being able to help her made him happy. However, he was touched by Marianne's thoughtfulness and vowed to continue helping her.

The program had reached its end. The topic of the next episode was Giralda, which Pheles gave to Kazumi Yoshida.
