Part 1: Mare Edition (第1回「メア」編 Dai 1-kai 'Mea'-hen?) is the first episode of Friagne and Marianne no Naze Nani Shana! covering the second season of the anime series, and thirteenth overall. It was released on the first Shakugan no Shana Second DVD volume.

Summary[]

Friagne and Marianne reintroduced the program for the audience. Marianne wondered if it was alright for them to continue hosting the show, as they only had guest appearances in the anime and she had heard a rumor that the two would not even appear in flashback scenes after episode 02. However, Friagne stated that if that were the case, it was all the more reason to protect Naze Nani Shana!, their bastion of love, so that they would gain eternity. Marianne agreed.

Marianne asked Friagne to talk about "Village of Jestful Slumber" Mare, the Crimson Denizen who had recently appeared. Mare was a Denizen who wielded so little power that she was not noticed by the "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter", "Flame of Heaven", or even the Mystes of the Reiji Maigo until she appeared before them. Friagne stated that the amount of power Mare possessed did not hold a candle to the amount he had poured into Marianne. Marianne asked how Mare caused so much trouble for "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyes" despite wielding little power. Friagne answered that she was able to due to her Unrestricted Spell Gemeinde.

Friagne explained that the girl who first appeared before "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyes" was not the actual Mare, but a nameless Mystes holding the Treasure Tool Papagena. The real Mare was the clown who parasitized the Mystes, a Torch with a Treasure Tool, by eating away its mind through her dreams and taking it over. The dream space Mare used was Gemeinde. Gemeinde took shape from the memories of the Mystes it was taking over. On this occasion, Yūji had been under its control, so the world and the enemies that appeared were constructed from what he had experienced. Many enemies were able to appear and attacks had no effect on Mare because it was all in a dream under her control. However, when the target realizes it's a dream, the illusory world immediately collapses. Mare was also fatally wounded by the Kaikin placed on the Reiji Maigo, so therefore, there was a limit to what she could accomplish as a weak Denizen. Marianne wondered what reasons Mare had for recklessly going into battle, and Friagne answered that all Denizens had their own wishes and dreams, and Mare would have harbored something within that they could not guess at.

The program was near its end, though Marianne had more questions she wanted to ask. Friagne stated that sad farewells give birth to happy reunions. The next episode's topic was the mechanism within the Reiji Maigo which repelled Mare, the Kaikin.
