"Nitpicking Edition" (重箱の隅編 Jūbako no Sumi-hen?) is the third special episode of Friagne and Marianne no Naze Nani Shana!. It was released on DVD Magazine α (DVDまがじんα?), a bonus DVD bundled with limited edition printings of Anime Shakugan no Shana no Subete. It is over double the length of a regular episode, and unlike other episodes, it directly adapts questions from Kariudo no Friagne Nandemo Shitsumon-bako, namely from the segments published in volume 0, volume S, and Shakugan no Shana no Subete.

Summary[]

Marianne expressed how touched she was that she would be able to make another episode of Naze Nani Shana! with Friagne. Friagne felt the same way, saying they were victorious in a way for their increasing screen-time in bonus material. Marianne agreed that they had obtained eternity here. Friagne took Marianne off-screen to show her some love, but she reminded him of the task at hand; they would be able to embrace later. They would protect their castle of love, this program, by answering the audience's questions. Friagne asked for the first question.

Question 1 (Volume 0)[]

Marianne asked how a human losing their existence through becoming a Torch and disappearing from this world is different from dying. Friagne explained that the loss of existence was different from normal death in that all proof that the person existed disappears. When someone dies or is killed, they will be mourned and remembered by others. However, when someone loses Power of Existence, the fundamental power needed to exist in this world, all traces of their existence and others' memories of them are lost, making it so that they never existed in the first place. Because they never existed, no one will be saddened by their absence and they will never be remembered. Marianne pointed out that the influence the vanished human had on their surroundings would remain to a certain extent, causing contradictions and unnatural phenomena to occur from them not being present. Friagne stated that this was what Distortion of the World was. Some Crimson Lords feared that the increase and accumulation of Distortions would lead to a definitive collapse they called the Great Calamity and were trying to prevent it by giving power to Flame Haze and going around killing their brethren. Marianne commented that Friagne was a victim of this uncertain prediction, which saddened him. He wanted to move on to the next question.

Question 2 (Volume 0)[]

Marianne asked what kind of place the Crimson Realm was and Friagne answered that it was a world in which power itself blended together. Marianne was interested in the Crimson Realm as she knew nothing about it, being a Rinne born in this world. A precise explanation was difficult because the Crimson Realm was made up of different laws of physics to this world, but in an attempt to forcibly express the realm in this world's concepts, he explained that it was "a world in which all things endlessly change based on influence by phenomena and interference through will". This was difficult to understand for Marianne, who asked if the Crimson Realm was red like its name suggested, but this question was pointless because the Crimson Realm was a world in which the five senses had no meaning. Friagne's brethren had initially referred to the world they came from as the "Swirling Cathedral". One day, a human, who was a master poet, had heard of their homeland from them and created the names "Crimson Realm" and "Denizens" based on their impressions of what they had heard. Friagne's brethren had liked those names and they then fell into common use.

Question 3 (Volume S)[]

Marianne asked whether the Mystes of the Reiji Maigo, Yūji Sakai, would get burnt by "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" Shana's Guren no Sōyoku. Friagne explained that he wouldn't because there are two types of Flames Flame Haze and Denizens can produce. Like the "little one" in this case, the majority of the sparks and brilliance produced by Hunters and Denizens are not fire in a physical sense, but the partial visualization of the interference in phenomena that is occurring, namely the appearance of an impossibility. Marianne mentioned the flames the "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter" shoots out from her sword and Endan as examples of real flames due to them causing objects to burn. Friagne explained that those two examples were manifestations of the phenomena of burning with flames, so were in fact flames. Guren no Sōyoku was a manifestation of a visualization of flight and burning was not its purpose, though it most likely could if desired.

Question 4 (Volume S)[]

Marianne asked what the differences were between Crimson Lords and Denizens, and Friagne answered that they were categorized by the amount of Power of Existence they could control. He made it easier for Marianne by stating that Lords, including himself, were Denizens who wielded tremendous power. Marianne asked whether the Denizen "Glazed Eyes" Vine could become a Lord by gaining great power through using City Devourer, but Friagne said it didn't work like that. If someone without the proper aptitude or ability gained a vast amount of power, their will would be engulfed, their existence would be diluted, and they would eventually disappear. Powerful Denizens, or Lords, are Denizens who can control a large amount of Power of Existence and create large phenomena using it. Therefore, Vine would remain a Denizen even if he had great power. Marianne wondered if there was any way a Denizen could become a Lord. Denizens grow and there is no clear classification between the two terms, so if they get stronger and become feared by others, they may naturally become referred to as Lords. Like with humans, the degree of growth for Denizens depends on innate talent and aptitude as well as training and devotion. This means that there are those who worked their whole lives and remained Denizens, and those who were born Lords.

Questions 5, 6, and 7 (Shakugan no Shana no Subete)[]

Marianne wanted to know how humans became Torches, which Friagne thought was a rudimentary question. A Torch can only be created after a Denizen devours a human's existence and processes it using an Unrestricted Spell. This is a basic skill that all Denizens have.

Marianne asked whether a Torch could ever become a human again and Friagne replied that they could not, likening it to putting grapes back on their vines after making wine with them.

Marianne then asked what would happen if a Flame Haze or Denizen bestowed Power of Existence to a Torch. It would just become a "healthy Torch", but this does not change the fact that it will eventually disappear.

Questions 8, 9, and 10 (Shakugan no Shana no Subete)[]

Marianne wondered whether every Denizen could use Unrestricted Spells. For Denizens, popular Unrestricted Spells such as the Fūzetsu and Humanize are like melodies they can sing once remembered. Using them is as easy as humming.

Marianne asked who was thinking up and creating Unrestricted Spells and Friagne stated that various Denizens of the past had contributed to this field. Chief among them is "Spiral Organ", an expert who has created many Unrestricted Spells. Another notable person is "Seeking Researcher" and his "Self-Research", though his theories are difficult to understand and put into practice, meaning they are seldom used by other Denizens. Friagne mentioned that the Fūzetsu was an Unrestricted Spell based on "Seeking Researcher"'s "Self-Research" which "Spiral Organ" had improved to make it easier to use.

Marianne then asked if there were special Unrestricted Spells unique to a single person. Friagne explained that special Unrestricted Spells were phenomena embodying the personalities of their users, and brought up "Thousand Changes"' Transformation, "One-Indulged-in-Love-of-Others"' Cradle Garden, "Glazed Eyes"' searching ability, and "Commander of Thousand Conquests"' Legion as examples.

Marianne suddenly exclaimed that they didn't have much time left. As they still had questions left, she and Friagne agreed to blast through the remaining ones.
