The name "Engage Link" was something they chose for themselves, but it took around a hundred years for it to become widely recognized.[2]
Background[]

A clock tower was broken down to become materials for the creation of Reiji Maigo

Johann allowing himself to become a Torch, and then the host of Reiji Maigo
The pair were the creators and original owners of the secret Treasure Tool Reiji Maigo. It was created in order for Johann, who was just a human, to be able to be by his beloved Lord for eternity. He then turned into a Mystes by his own volition.
Together as they wanted, the Engage Link wandered the world for three hundred years. As the host of Reiji Maigo, Johann remained unchanged in appearance. He honed his skills in manipulating Power of Existence and Unrestricted Spells and became a renowned Unrestricted Spell Master. Pheles also never has to rely on devouring other humans as she could access the necessary Power of Existence from Johann, since his was replenished every midnight by Reiji Maigo. This made them considered harmless to the balance of the world[3], but on the other hand, a target by a certain organization for the Treasure Tool itself.
During their journey, they assisted a Flame Haze Claude Taylor in exacting his vengeance and gave him another Treasure Tool Giralda as a parting gift. When Claude returned to his family and then left to join the Révolution and their scheme in Hawaii, the Engage Link were summoned by his wife, at the cost of her life, to help her husband who was lost in his way. Along with Flame Haze Seere Habichtsburg and Chiara Toscana, they managed to thwart Sarachael's scheme to expose Crimson Denizen's existence to humans. The Engage Link later stayed in Hawaii with the remaining human member of Révolution, Harriet Smith, witnessing the change of the human world at the start of the new century. This led them to remain unseen by others for about a hundred years before the main story.
After the death of Harriet, two years before the main story started, the Engage Link resumed their journey once again. Sometime, they visited Nam, a Flame Haze who welcomed them warmly when they went to Guyaku in Central Asia. During this time, they were targeted by a hired assassin Sabrac who relentlessly pursuing them. At one time, they encountered and saved a Flame Haze named Wilhelmina Carmel in Central Asia when she got caught up in Sabrac's attack. They then traveled together thereafter while fending off Sabrac.
At the end of April, right before the the main story started, they and Wilhelmina were ambushed by Sabrac who set up a trap in Guyaku. They were attacked and defeated by the assassin. To protect Wilhelmina, Pheles withdrew from battle, taking Sabrac with her. Before that, she sealed the mortally wounded Johann inside the Reiji Maigo and let it randomly teleported away, causing the couple to be separated. Unbeknownst to her, Sabrac embedded a certain Unrestricted Spell Insignia into the Reiji Maigo which caused the Treasure Tool to gradually transform into Tyrant I.
Pheles continued to search for the Reiji Maigo with her Unrestricted Spell Kaze no Tenrin ever since. She now vowed to herself never let her eyes out of Johann again, even if she had to ignore or hurt her best friend Wilhelmina.
The Reiji Maigo would then transported itself into a Torch named Yūji Sakai.
Plot[]
Johann, who was sealed inside the Reiji Maigo, sensed the changes made to the Treasure Tool and the Kaikin previously installed by Pheles. He secretly modified and activated the absorption ability of the Tyrant I that was cohabiting with him inside their host. He also created a circuit using part of Power of Existence taken from the Reiji Maigo's regenerative power to constantly deploy a scanning and searching network. He researched and analyzed the Insignia known as the Psalm of the Grand Order. He discovered that this Insignia caused both him and the Reiji Maigo to mutate completely. Johann aimed to bide his time and hope that he would eventually decipher the entirety of the massive Psalm of the Grand Order and find a solution before Pheles found him.
At the Seishū Festival, Pheles' spell finally discovered the Reiji Maigo. The puppet made to be an exact copy of Pheles manifested and approached Yūji, but was stopped. The puppet bid enough time for the real Pheles to arrive and save Johann. However, she was struck by Tyrant II, who appeared out of the Reiji Maigo. Bal Masqué made a move to seal the rampant Tyrant II. Johann managed to take advantage of the situation and resurface for a brief period of time and reunited with Pheles. He asked his lover to do certain three things for him which Pheles was reluctant to follow: locate the location of Seireiden, search for the smuggler group Hyakki Yakō, and modify the Psalm of the Grand Order with Nomenclator for a certain goal.
After Yūji decided to merge with the Snake of the Festival and became Bal Masqué's Leader, Johann somehow managed to make a contact with Lamies, who came to assist Bal Masqué as its goal aligned with his. Johann asked him to deliver a "cheat sheet" for the Psalm of the Grand Order to Wilhelmina who came to rescue Shana, which allowed Flame Haze's side to modify the Psalm of the Grand Order without having to start analyzing it from scratch which would take decades.

The Engage Link and a flask that would become their child Justus
At the end of the Second Great War, in Misaki City where the ceremony to create the New World Xanadu was carrying out, Pheles was summoned by Kazumi Yoshida. She then awakened Johann, who took a portion of Power of Existence from Yūji to construct his own body. He first teased Yūji by reclaiming the Reiji Maigo and then let him keep the Treasure Tool. He then left the area with Pheles on Hyakki Yakō's vehicle.
Knowing that Johann, as a Torch, could not live without the Reiji Maigo, the Engage Link then used the modified Psalm of the Grand Order to break down their own existences and establish a new existence which gave birth to their child, the "Heir to Both Worlds" Justus, before vanishing together.
