EastEdge Foreign News (イーストエッジ外信 Īsutoejji Gaishin ), also known as EastEdge News Agency,[1][2] is an Outlaw branch in Lower Manhattan, New York City which had been supervised by "Summoner of Star River" EastEdge. It was the main Outlaw in New York from its founding until at least the 1930s.[3]
Background[]
Features[]
EastEdge Foreign News is situated on the ground floor of a small row house at the northern corner of the intersection of Wall Street and William Street in Lower Manhattan.[4] The row house is in between the S Detective Bureau and the K Legal Information Center.[4][5]

The sign at the front of the building, in the anime.
The building's entrance has a cold feel to it due to its lack of decorations as well as its plainness. Above the main door is an old signboard with words meaning "EastEdge Foreign News" written in different languages both horizontally and vertically. The building has likely never been remodeled since EastEdge founded it. Next to the door with the signboard above is another door meant for Flame Haze, which requires an amount of force to open which can never be achieved by a human's physical strength. Fastened to the door is a cord which rings a loud bell when the door is opened, notifying the entire store that a Flame Haze has arrived.[6]

The interior of the Outlaw, with its Tessera near the ceiling.
It is surprisingly spacious inside and resembles a speakeasy. It is cluttered with bottles and barrels of alcohol, its counter is just a horizontal plank with a few stools, and its walls are made of bare brick and wooden boarding. A narrow and steep flight of stairs led to the second floor, which is for visitor and member lodging.[6] In the 1930s, it was a very ordinary scene inside the building save for two things that distinguished it as an Outlaw. The first was the numerous hand-drawn sea charts and maps which covered up the front wall.[6] The newer ones were placed on top of older ones and they had many notes and markings written on them by different people. In the 1930s, the most prominent map on the wall was the latest world map from the United States Geological Survey, and a big circle had been drawn around Europe in the map's center.[3] In modern times, these maps had been replaced by a single set of telecommunication equipment.[5] The second thing distinguishing it as an Outlaw was its Tessera, a Treasure Tool in the shape of a palm-sized regular dodecahedron which floated near the ceiling and faintly illuminated the shop celadon-color, the color of EastEdge's Flames. The Tessera blocks off the Presence of anyone within a certain range of it. Only a wooden wall separated this room from the newspaper company next to it operated by the Outlaw's members, such as Yurii Chvojka.[3] The newspaper company had taken up half the area of the shop.[5]
History[]
In the past, the Outlaw publicly operated as a kind of importing business whose customers were immigrants of diverse ethnic backgrounds, and it sold them newspapers from their home countries. By the 1930s, it was conducting business as a legitimate foreign news agency, having the capacity to send out correspondents and report on events in Europe in each European language.[4] Despite the news agency's appearance, it had been a reliable source of news and produced newspapers in many languages. It bustled with activity on days when the newspapers became available, but on normal business days, it had been just a quiet newspaper company on the outskirts of the city that would be lucky to have ten visitors a day.[4][6] EastEdge used this foreign news agency as a cover for the Outlaw.[7]
In modern times, the New York Outlaw Headquarters is a multi-story building among the skyscrapers in Lower Manhattan.[8] It is therefore much bigger in scale than EastEdge Foreign News, which is only a branch of Outlaw. EastEdge Foreign News is about one kilometer east of the New York Headquarters and EastEdge had still based himself there despite being the manager of the headquarters. The newspaper business had completely changed into a shop which sold a vast range of imported general goods. It was a general store only known to a small number of maniacs. However, the other side of the store which functioned as an Outlaw branch hadn't changed at all.[5]
Trivia[]
- The detective bureau and legal information center buildings that EastEdge Foreign News is in between are allusions to the TV show, Choukou Senshi Changéríon, which Shakugan no Shana author Yashichirō Takahashi often references. They are referencing the Suzumura Detective Bureau and the Kuroiwa Consultation Office.
