Dragon Tail (竜尾 Ryūbi) is a long hair extended from the back of Yūji Sakai's head after he becomes the Snake of the Festival's substitute body. It takes form of a jet black dragon tail, hence the name. Dragon Tail is a modification made on Yūji's body by Dantalion. When Yūji is in his human appearance, he changes Dragon Tail into a shape of a black scarf in winter, and a bolo tie in summer.
Dragon Tail can be used both offensively and defensively, as Yūji can freely manipulate the size and length of his hair at will. It is also strong enough to tear a tall building in half, and durable enough to block Shana's flame blast (before her awakening) and simultaneous attacks from Ribesal and his duplicates. However, Dragon Tail showed a significantly dent after receiving a punch from Shana's Shinku during the final battle in Misaki City.
Dragon Tail also assists Yūji's movement and posture control like how he uses it to "jump" by hitting it on the ground. Aside from Yūji's intended control, Dantalion also includes automatic defensive functions; this is crucial to Yūji as it compensates for his openings and shortcomings. Yūji, who relies on brute strength due to his lack of refined swordsmanship, is able to hold his own against Shana in close combat thanks to this tail.
Background[]
Dragon Tail was used many times by Yūji before and during the Second Great War. However, both Dragon Tail and Tyrant stopped functioning after Dantalion was caught in the explosion from his own creation, Kisan no Taiken.
In the final clash between Shana and Yūji after Xanadu has been created, the immobile Dragon Tail was cut off by her Nietono no Shana and scattered like a bundle of hair. This incident caused Yūji's long hair to become the length of his hair before he contracted with the Snake of the Festival.
Fortunately, Dragon Tail was not completely destroyed. Yūji took it along with Tyrant to the new world. He repeatedly attempted to analyze and restart both Dragon Tail and Tyrant. One year later, as of the following spring, he had yet to succeed, begrudgingly commended Dantalion for his ingenuity in creating these masterpieces.
Prior to the incident with a Crimson Denizen organization Color Thieves, Yūji finally manages to reactivate both Dragon Tail and Tyrant once again.
Trivia[]
- In Shakugan no Shana Final Episode 24, it is not shown how Yūji's hair was cut off by Shana.
