The City Devourer Incident (『都喰らい』事件 "Miyakokurai" Jiken)[6][7] refers to the conflict between Töten Glocke and both Flame Haze and Crimson Lord forces around the city of Osterode and "Weaver of Coffins" Asiz succeeding in converting Osterode into Power of Existence with City Devourer. It is regarded as the event which started the Great War.[1]
Chronology[]
In Osterode, Asiz had woven Key Thread into Torches he had devoured, which would allow him to decompose the Torches and turn them back into Power of Existence. After devouring 10% of Osterode's population, he had activated the mechanism. At once, all the Torches had lost their function as replacements and reverted into Power of Existence, causing the whole city to be swallowed up and converted into an enormous amount of high purity Power of Existence.[8] Asiz took all this power into himself. The end result was an unprecedented amount of Distortions.[9]
The Flame Haze had gathered at Osterode due to sensing the distortion from Asiz creating many Torches.[1] They tried to prevent the activation of City Devourer but failed, losing many powerful Flame Haze in the battle. They were only able to destroy one of the Nine Eternal Divine Scales,[9] Huwawa, who was destroyed by Mathilde Saint-Omer.
The battle progressed with the Nine Eternal Divine Scales on the defensive, guarding Asiz and Osterode as they were under siege from all sides by the Flame Haze and opposing Crimson Lords. Töten Glocke were at a disadvantage for much of the battle due to the number of enemies and unfavorable topography, as Osterode was a metropolis located on an open plain. Asiz succeeding in activating City Devourer changed the tide of the battle. Asiz shared some of the power he had gained with the Nine Eternal Divine Scales and joined the battle. They proceeded to quickly pulverize their enemies.[1][4] As the Flame Haze retreated, Huwawa gave chase, but was defeated by Mathilde Saint-Omer.[4]
Aftermath[]
The decisive defeat for the Flame Haze gave Flame Haze around the world and Crimson Lords in the Crimson Realm who were observing a great sense of impending danger, leading to the formation of the Flame Haze Army and more Lords forming contracts with humans. Many clashes with Töten Glocke followed, until the war between the forces neared its end 18 years later with the Nachtigall Struggle.
