City Devourer (都喰らい Miyakokurai ) is a powerful, large-scale Unrestricted Spell[1] that is able to convert an entire city (both animate and inanimate objects) directly into Power of Existence of high purity for Crimson Denizens to consume, hence the name.
It is also considered one of the "secret methods" (秘法 Hihō );[2] the other one being Eternal Pitfall.
Background[]
The inventor of this spell, Asiz used it to convert the city of Osterode into Power of Existence required for fulfilling his "Grand Scheme" at the start of the Great War. His attempt is later referred to as the City Devourer Incident, and was considered a threat equaling the feared "Great Calamity" (大災厄 Daisaiyaku )[3] which led to the creation of Flame Haze in large numbers.
Another user of this spell, Friagne attempted to use it to turn Misaki City into Power of Existence so he could make the existence of his Rinne, Marianne, permanent.
Both users of this spell needed to create rigged Torches around the city before activating the spell, however Friagne's version is far more efficient thanks to the Treasure Tool, Dance Party. Whereas the City Devourer as utilized by Asiz required at least 10% of the city's population to be converted into rigged Torches, Friagne needed far less than that.
In Friagne's attempt, Fūzetsu can interfere with the operation of this spell by blocking Dance Party's sound from reaching rigged Torches in Misaki City, thus preventing it from being completed.[4]
Trivia[]
- Since Fūzetsu was invented by Leanan-sidhe after the end of the Great War, the City Devourer Incident was inevitable.
